Amy laughed softly as she checked on her sleeping son one more time before slipping out of the nursery and past Song's room. Her friend was absorbed in a book, and would hopefully remain that way until she'd gotten herself back up here. Chase had made herself scarce, but handy, which was easy enough to do in this house. A cackle escaped her as she practically bounced down the stairs. Poor Josi, he wouldn't know what hit him. Hell, neither would Song. Well, at first, anyway.

Amy hurried outside and over to where she'd left Jalen earlier, beneath Song's windows. He had orders to be inconspicuous, but wasn't doing a good job of it. She found him lying on his back staring up at Song's room with a scowl on his face. That wasn't going to work. She knelt next to him, lowering her voice.

"Oh come on, you can't do it that way! It's too easy to figure out you're here for a reason!"

Jalen sat up and brushed himself off. "What do you want me to do then? Pick flowers?"

"Why not?"

Her husband groaned and flopped back onto the grass. "It's still meddling. So what if they want to escape down a bed sheet?"

"But you said you'd do this for me...Okay, after I bribed you and pleaded, but Jale..." She started to pout.

"All right, I'll do something else, but you'd better get inside before you give everything away."

With a happy squeal, Amy jumped up and darted back into the house, parking herself close to the front door so she wouldn't miss Josi when he arrived.

She looked right back up at him, and her mouth curved in a small smile.

There was no need for her to say anything either. She simply wrapped her free arm tightly over his back and pulled him down to her.

He let her pull him closer, and kissed her, murmuring her name as he did so. With her, he could forget everything bad that had happened in the previous year, every terrifying memory, every doubt he had about himself, and let it vanish in her presence.

Tonight, his world was her and only her.

Some time later, Song had draped herself comfortably across Josiah's chest and closed her eyes to listen to his heartbeat.

She'd solved her mystery.

What she'd felt earlier was the same thing she'd felt all along, that strange difference with Josiah, nothing at all like what she'd had with Orpheus.

Somewhere back there, with Josiah so close and so open to her, she'd finally recognized it.

Even at their dearest moments, Orpheus had always kept his heart at a distance. It was as if she could touch it with her fingertips, but not get near enough to embrace it. She hadn't even been aware of this until she had something to contrast it with.

In a way, it was exactly the same as the other difference between them. Josiah was her equal, and her friend before he was anything else.
Orpheus, in her mind, had never ceased to be her Superior.

It probably shouldn't have taken a night like this for her to realize why she was so much happier now...

But at least she knew.
