"No... I don't need any encouragement whatsoever. You better watch out for Yasha there," she added, eyeing her German Shepherd follower. "He gets jealous when he catches me petting anyone else."

This time when she came to the doorway of the main living room, Song's gaze went straight to the long row of stockings, and she noticed what she hadn't seen before.

"Is that a... feather?"

"I think he'll be alright." When they came into the main living room, he knelt down next to the dog, ruffling his fur cheerfully. "I guess you're a good guard dog then."

He glanced over his shoulder when Song mentioned a feather. "What about a feather?"

In Yasha's mind, Josiah was quickly earning points to becoming his new Favorite Person. Under his mistress, of course, who was God.

"I think someone decided that you needed a parrot for Christmas," Song said as she slunk over to investigate the stockings. Hers was, conveniently, hung next to Josiah's. She suspected this was Amy's or Mabry's doing, and once she stole a peak into his while taking her own down, that suspicion was reinforced.

"Nope, not a parrot. Looks like just... feathers."

From: [identity profile] epauranonavere.livejournal.com
"A talking parrot?" That'd be an... interesting present and at least he frowned at the newest member of the crew, a tiny man who was just as loud and irritating as that bloody parrot that sat on his shoulder, but damn, he was a good shot it could lead to some interesting conversations.

"So someone put a bunch of feathers in there... okay, I've heard of putting coal in stockings, but feathers?"

From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
Song carried her own stocking back to her spot on the couch, somehow managing to resemble a leopard with a fresh kill. Or perhaps - as Yasha left Josiah to sit at Song's feet - a dog with a bone.

Though she seemed mostly intent on digging through her little prizes, she kept glancing up at the feather still poking over the edge of Josiah's stocking. "There might be more to it. I couldn't really tell..."

He rose to his feet and crossed over the fireplace, glancing at the stocking and peering inside. Feathers. A hell of a lot of feathers. He poked it experimentally, and then shrugged.

"As long as a parakeet or a hamster doesn't come flying out, I think I'm good."

From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
Now she was just watching him, with half the contents of her stocking set out neatly on the coffee table and the rest momentarily ignored.

"Perhaps you should bring it over here. Then Yasha can catch anything that jumps out."

From: [identity profile] epauranonavere.livejournal.com
He shrugged, picking up the stocking and bringing it over to Song. He sat next to her, petting Yasha on the head as he did so. "So when everyone wakes up, they'll see a German shepherd chasing a hamster around the room. Sounds like an amazing way to start a Christmas."

From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
"Uh huh." The response was unusually vague, and Song's attention seemed to be on the stocking, not Josiah. She was staring with great interest at the variety of fluffy and wispy feathers visible now that he'd brought it close.

Tentatively, she reached over and pulled a long feather from the stocking, holding it up to look at and twirling it between her fingers. "Did you know..." she said in a somewhat dreamy voice, "I absolutely love feathers?"

From: [identity profile] epauranonavere.livejournal.com
He watched her quietly as she twirled one of the feathers in her finger, as if trying to figure something out. He glanced back down at the feathers, picking one up and examining it carefully.

"But you didn't put these feathers in there?"

Date: 2009-12-28 04:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
She shook her head slowly, still staring at the feather in front of her face. Now she was waving it gently up and down, watching the individual filaments waft in the air.

"I did not. However, I have a theory. Amy and Mabry are both very aware of this... interest of mine. As are a few others. Unless, of course, there is some other reason why feathers would be an appropriate gift for you?"

From: [identity profile] epauranonavere.livejournal.com
"Not that I know of. I would have expected Aria to fill it with bubbles or something." He was drawing a blank on the importance of the feathers, but figured the perpetrator would have to wake up eventually.

From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
Playing with one pretty feather was nice, but Song couldn't help remembering that there were quite a few more still untouched.

And a Josiah.

"A bottle of soap and a bubble wand would have been amusing."

She leaned a little closer as she spoke and idly ran her chosen feather under Josiah's chin, in what was more of a caress than a tickle. She watched his reaction attentively.

From: [identity profile] epauranonavere.livejournal.com
"I'd be surprised if I didn't get that from someone later today," he laughed. Actually, all things considering, he'd be surprised if he didn't get a hamster ball too.

His eyes widened and he gave a start when Song ran the feather under his chin, and he half turned to her. "You are too damn distracting."

From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
"I told you. I love feathers."
She grinned wickedly, and repeated the gesture, this time wiggling the feather a little for a more ticklish effect. Again, she was watching him carefully, as if experimenting to see how much he could take. In truth, her intentions were a little kinder than that. Some people didn't like being tickled, and she'd quickly stop if he seemed irritated by it.

From: [identity profile] epauranonavere.livejournal.com
"Uh-huh." He closed his eyes, trying to ignore the damned thing. "Sure you do." He opened one eye and peered at Yasha. "Bet she doesn't do this to you."

Date: 2009-12-28 05:17 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
Hmm. He wasn't reacting much at all. Either he wasn't ticklish, or he was as stubbornly resistant as her brother.
For his part, the dog just pricked his ears up for a moment and looked back at Josiah expectantly.

"Yasha gets hugs and has to dance with me. Pretty good deal if he were human, but I think to a dog it's almost as bad as this."

She tried tickling the side of his neck.

Date: 2009-12-28 05:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] epauranonavere.livejournal.com
"Almost feel sorry for him for the danci- ack!" The tickling on his neck finally got a reaction from him and he fell backwards onto the floor, trying to put as much distance between him and the feather as possible.

Date: 2009-12-28 05:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
She gave a short burst of laughter, as if she were the one being tickled, while Yasha edged closer to Josiah uncertainly, trying to see what was wrong.

"Sorry," she said with traces of laughter still in her voice. "I'll stop if you want."

Date: 2009-12-28 05:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] epauranonavere.livejournal.com
He glared up at her, but couldn't keep the mischievous spark out of his eyes. "Right. I can tell you're really sorry."

From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
"Very sorry, because that was my only plan for curing you. You see..." she raised an index finger as if explaining an important fact, "I often say that hugs heal everything, but for the toughest problems, there is a faster way. Now, it's risky. Side effects include shortness of breath and mild stomach cramps... but there's nothing like all-out, uncontrolled laughter to make a person forget all of their problems."

Date: 2009-12-28 05:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] epauranonavere.livejournal.com
"Heh, I don't think I'm that bad," he said, reaching for her and pulling her down into a quick kiss. "Next time, I'll have to use Yasha as a shield or something."
From: [identity profile] songbird9.livejournal.com
She just chuckled lightly, easily slipping into a more comfortable position on the floor with him, then having to squirm aside as Yasha pawed his way between them. She'd said he was jealous... she hadn't specified how he would react. It wasn't aggression that she had been warning about. If the dog saw her playing or cuddling someone else, he wanted to be part of it too.

They must have made quite an odd sight, on the floor between the couch and the coffee table, with the dog crammed between them and feathers loosely scattered about by all the activity.

Jalen's stocking was draped over Amy's arm as she walked into the room, her free hand playing with a silver locket at her throat. She'd gotten tired of waiting to give him his furry little gift, and had made off with the stocking earlier that morning. Her husband was currently upstairs, trying to pry a very nimble kitten off his shirt.

"Merry Christmas to anyone that's up!"

When she saw Josiah and Song on the floor, she stopped dead and just stared for a minute. Feathers were everywhere (Where had feathers come from? Last she'd checked, Song didn't molt) and Yasha was in the middle of the couple. Ookay.

"Or down. Am I interrupting you two?" She couldn't help the giggle that followed the question. Merry Christmas indeed.

He was just getting used to the idea of staying there on the floor with Song in his arms and Yasha trying to get some attention too when Amy walked in. He blinked at her giggle and tried to sit up... but slammed his head on the table instead. He let out a hiss and then decided that maybe the floor was a lot more comfortable with his sudden headache.

He waved weakly at Amy. "Merry Christmas."
