Who: Jalen, Amy, and Ladybug
What: Apparently that bracelet's not working as well as it should
Where: Rainbow's End
When: January 14, 2012, afternoon
"-so I think we'll have enough streamers for the party tomorrow, but we really should skip the- Saelig? ...You're fidgeting again."
"Huh?" While Eli laughed over his Christmas gift from Ray (a Gummi train set) on the playroom floor, Amy had been staring off into space just over his head, her left hand pulling absently at the key charm on her bracelet. She glanced up and met Jalen's eyes. "I was what?"
"Fidgeting. Again. Mostly with that." He gestured to the bracelet, her fingers still absently tugging at the piece.
"Wasn't."
Jalen frowned at that; she didn't seem to realize she was still doing it. He crossed over to her and knelt in front of her chair, taking her hands in his. She stilled, then smiled faintly.
"I'm all right."
"Are you sure? How do you feel, right now?"
Amy tilted her head at him curiously, as if she didn't understand the question. Then:
"Dunno. Antsy. A little impatient. Distracted. Big deal, it's Eli's birthday tomorrow."
Jalen nodded and rose, releasing her hands. As he did, Amy caught the odd expression on his face as he eyed her bracelet. Now, what was that for?
"Jalen?"
"I'll be back in a few minutes." He was halfway out of the room before she could reply, and then Eli wandered over, clutching the caboose of the train to himself.
"Mama, it broked."
"Lemme see." She took the caboose and looked it over, then shook her head. "It's not broken, Ladybug. It just came loose. Here, I'll show you."
Amy joined her son on the floor and helped him reassemble it, laughing softly as Eli's smiles made the train run.
