Who: Aria, Seph, Roxas and Song
What: Hunting down the phantom train
Where: Twilight Town
When: August 9th and 10th
As predicted, gathering information for this little sidequest had been relatively easy - a refreshing change from the usual, lately. The rumor had spread like rumors do in Twilight Town. A new mystery train, considerably spookier than the one which led to YenSid's tower, and possibly causing illness in those who got to close. Since she had not ever bothered to get the GF in Final Fantasy VIII, Song couldn't remember if this was a sign pointing towards Doomtrain. Either way, it would certainly make finding this thing a risky job, but it was all the more reason to take care of it.
It also seemed that Roxas was right in his supposition about the mystery train being restricted to the tracks, but that was a fairly obvious thing to assume. After strolling back and fourth around Sunset Terrace a few times, stopping and asking just about everyone she met... Song was ready for an early bedtime. More importantly, though, she'd compiled the various reports she'd picked up and determined that the most frequent sightings of the train had taken place on the edge of town, in a shady district that the tracks passed over twice - once on ground level and once along one of those graceful arcing bridges.
Early the next morning, as soon as she'd finished wolfing down some toast and her mandatory cup of green tea, she took the free ride from Sunset Station to Central to wait for the others, armed with her glaive and a pocket-sized notebook.

He would never have known Hayner had fallen ill because of this thing and he kind of doubted that one strong fighter and two idiots could stop it. Then again, he wasn't so sure two strong fighters and two idiots could stop it either.
Speaking of the others, since they seemed able to handle things for the moment, Roxas worked his way to the front of the car to take a look at the next one. It was the coal car, or whatever the hell the proper name for it was, and there were quite a few Heartless swarming over it. They almost seemed to be buzzing around it like flies around a turd, actually. While there seemed to be few of them, there was a distinct problem: they were all fire wielding Heartless such as Red Nocturnes and Scarlet Tangoes.
"You've got to be kidding me..."

Slowly but surely, though, the horde was thinning. When possible, she joined Seph and Roxas near the front of the car, almost walking backwards to keep the Heartless at bay.

Date: 2010-08-20 04:16 pm (UTC)"Hmm." They probably didn't have too much time to think. If people got sick just from seeing it then being on it pretty much guaranteed it. "Icing the whole thing over would make footing treacherous..." He knew that Song could cast Water but, he wasn't sure she could dampen the whole car.
Aria zapped a group of Heartless and joined them at the front of the car. The car was mostly cleared by this point. "Or I could use Stop." Of course Roxas should know it too but, she had never seen him use it...

Date: 2010-08-20 11:47 pm (UTC)This needed planning.
"I'm open to suggestions," Roxas grumbled, "Casting Stop will work, but we can't just run out there like idiots."

Date: 2010-08-21 03:48 am (UTC)Aria stepped up to get a look at the car. "Hmm. Maybe if we aimed the spell at different sections of the car..." She looked questioningly at Roxas.

Date: 2010-08-21 11:44 pm (UTC)With that done, he took a quick count of how many Heartless were out there and what types exactly. They were mostly the fire using spell casters as had been his first impression, though he wouldn't have been surprised if there were a few Driller Moles hiding out in the coal.
"This ought to be fun. If we miss any with the spell, get them first. Aria, on three, okay?"

Date: 2010-08-22 02:57 am (UTC)While Roxas and Aria prepared to cast, she centered on the car's front exit, ready to move as soon as the spell too effect.

Brain dead tag is brain dead
Date: 2010-08-23 02:29 am (UTC)Seph chuckled and began to follow but, noticed something other than Aria was making the coal shift. He rushed to pull her back and a Driller Mole (http://kingdomhearts.wikia.com/wiki/Driller_Mole) popped up where she had been. He couldn't attack it at the moment for fear that he would set the whole car on fire with his current weapon...

Date: 2010-08-23 02:40 am (UTC)"You're kidding me, right?" he snapped as he dispatched one Mole and went for another, "This car's open. Where's your sword?"

Date: 2010-08-23 03:33 am (UTC)She took out her share by staying away from the coal until one emerged, darting in to give it a few good jabs and whacks, and then falling back. It was a very familiar system to her, practiced even when she was a child playing with wooden swords. Mabry had titled it Falcon Style because it apparently resembled the way a falcon might fight another bird, swooping in for a strike and then flying away again to prepare for another.
It always pleased Song how much those games had done to prepare her for life as a Refugee. She was born for this kind of adventure.
And maybe it was about time to use her other talents. They were close enough to the engine. Waiting until the last moment was all well and good, but Song preferred to get a head start.
"Soooo," she called over the racket of battle and the moving train, just in case. "Doomtrain! If it really is you... I hope you appreciate what we're doing here! No offense..." she slashed another Mole. "Returning the favor would be great!" So it was a bit blunt for her, but she figured that if this really was the Guardian Force, he/it/whatever would be the sort to appreciate directness over eloquence, and anyway, long speeches were difficult in a fight and not really worth the breath when you didn't even know if you were being heard.

Date: 2010-08-23 10:20 pm (UTC)Aria just stayed out of the way and considered tactics for if they had to fight the train itself.

Date: 2010-08-23 10:35 pm (UTC)The engine...
"Ah, crap," Roxas grumbled, finishing off the last Driller Mole, "Song, never mind the speech! Get to the engine! If this is a summon, it has a Heart and that's why the Heartless have boarded it." He didn't wait for anyone to respond, instead simply zipping off to the engine.

Braaaaaaiiins x_x
Date: 2010-08-24 12:29 am (UTC)"Dammit." Aria still had the fire staff and Seph already reached the engine. He was likely to have a bit of trouble finding room to swing his sword.

Date: 2010-08-24 01:08 am (UTC)Stop them...
"Huh?" Roxas was certainly hoping he wasn't the only one who had heard that. Still, there was no time to worry about it. The Heat Saber had spotted him.
Come to think of it, he hadn't fought this sort of Heartless since before he'd left the Organization. Oh well, he knew it's weakness and was considerably more skilled than he had been then. If he could draw it out of the tight space in the engine room, so much the better, but he really didn't want to be fighting a fire user on the coal car. There was an answer for that, though. Rather than exit out the back door and back onto the coal car, he went out the side and hopped up on top of the engine. The Heartless followed him.

Date: 2010-08-24 02:19 am (UTC)She'd deal with the Heartless inside.
She started off with a Blizzard this time, being careful not to damage any important part of the engine car with it. Her spells were weak, relatively, but the ice spell's effect would be increased against fire-oriented Heartless. She targeted the Heartless that appeared to be searching hardest for the heart, focusing more on defending the train than on simply destroying any Heartless that challenged her.

Date: 2010-08-24 02:33 am (UTC)Aria stayed to fight the rest of the heartless in the engine car along with Song.

Date: 2010-08-24 03:09 am (UTC)It was foolish to let the thought come in the first place. The Heat Saber took the first opening it saw, thrusting straight in and scoring a hit to his side as he hastily dodged to one side, trying not to go too far. Falling off the train did not sound like fun. The distraction had cost him. It wasn't a severe wound, but it would slow him a little bit.
A split second later, the Heartless took a hit from elsewhere, reminding Roxas that Seph had followed him. Given a new target, the Heartless turned and launched a spinning attack at Seph.

Date: 2010-08-24 03:16 am (UTC)Apparently she still had enough breath to tease Aria, however.
"So... Has it been a romantic train rescue?"
no subject
Date: 2010-08-24 03:35 am (UTC)Aria hadn't put the fire staff away before entering the car and now she really didn't have time to. Since they were dealing with mostly fire Heartless she dropped it off to one side.
"If any of this is Romantic, I'm a mongoose." She didn't care that it could probably be arranged for her to be a mongoose for a while...

Date: 2010-08-25 01:27 am (UTC)Fighting defensively, did work, though. Roxas waited for the Heat Saber to attack again and blocked this time, bracing for the impact and pushing back at the opponent's blades met his. It worked. The heat saber was thrown off balance, but as much as he wanted to finished it off with Blizzard, he risked hitting his ally on the other side of the enemy...
