Who: Roxas
What: He took a job...
Where: The Maw and Dark Depths
When: Friday, Feb. 27, early in the day
Status: Complete
Roxas left early... at least as early as having gone to bed around 1AM would allow. He'd been out of bed at eight, so that wasn't bad. He had to meet the client before setting out, as the man refused to give any further details than the fact that it was a hunt and he wanted a photo of the monster alive. It wasn't absolutely necessary, but he wanted it and would add another 200 munny for the picture. The rest of the reward was worth the trouble: 1,000 munny plus two each of a variety of synthesis materials. He only needed a couple of mythril shards to complete the lightweight, magic resistant mail shirt he wanted from the Moogles. The rest of the material... he would worry about that later, though he supposed it couldn't hurt to consider other items.
The client was waiting at the bailey as promised.
"Oh, you're early, lad. That's good. Very good."
"Uh, yeah. Anyway, this monster, aside from the fact that you want a picture of it... what is it? I can't exactly hunt it down if I don't know."
"Oh, of course, of course. It's, well... it's a chimera. A rare creature. If they weren't so blasted violent, I would only ask for the picture, but I'm afraid of what might happen if it decided to come into town, so... I just want the photo and to be sure the thing's dead." The man handed over a one use camera of the kind that had enough film for 24 pictures and probably didn't take very high quality pictures either. It hardly mattered. He didn't need the extra 200 munny, so he wouldn't be bothering with the picture.
"All right. Is there some kind of proof I should bring back?"
At that question the man handed him what seemed to be a leather bag, and said, "Bring back its lion head, be it whole or in pieces. You can keep any loot the beast might possess."
"Okay... And where did you see it?" Roxas took the bag, having a better understanding of what it might be made of now that he knew what was going in it.
"It seems to like the Maw and I think it also goes into Dark Depths." With that man walked away, rather quickly. Roxas considered shadowing the man to see where he went, but changed his mind. He knew where to find the guy, largely because he had asked around about him before accepting the job. A few of those asked had laughed at the idea of a boy taking on such a hunt. Roxas had said nothing, amused with the knowledge that he could have beaten any one of the guys who'd laughed at him bared handed, whith one hand tied behind his back and without breaking a sweat. Still, it was a bit aggravating that the man hadn't told him just what he was hunting until he'd come out to meet him. He knew chimeras were powerful. It was all he ever heard about them whenever he heard a mention of them. That and varying descriptions of their appearance. Sometimes it was a lion's head on a goat's body with a serpent's tail or it had three heads, lion, goat and dragon, with dragon wings on a lion's body and probably still with the serpent tail or even a scorpion's tail or whatever and, annoyingly enough, all those descriptions were accurate. It depended on what world the damned thing was found on.
He checked his things over briefly before heading out. He'd picked up a good stock of potions and ethers and had, after some consideration, decided he probably should take the backpack and bring along the computer. He doubted he would need to, but he did prefer being able to send for help if he needed it. The hike out to the Maw was annoying at best. He knew there'd be Killer Mantises around, having fought some of them recently. The Flans weren't that surprising either, although...
He encountered a Flan enemy with a frigging flame on top of its head like a candle and it was slinging Fire magic at him like if was going out style. It was safe to assume a Fire spell would heal it, so he tried Blizzard. The Flan recoiled... and cast a violent Firaga at him. He dodged to the right, taking a bad burn to his left arm.
"Son a bitch," he muttered, giving the monster a Blizzaga this time. The Flan deflated. He watched it, ready in case that wasn't quite it. It was. The slimy monster left a couple of Blaze Crystals in the puddle it formed. Hadn't there been someone in town asking for some of the liquids Flan monsters left behind? He was pretty sure there had and he did have a couple of empty bottles. He only filled one bottle with the liquid, since he was only getting to find out if it actually was worth anything. Either way, he didn't linger long.
In the Maw, he found some kind of Mandragora. It was an Onion, but he was pretty sure it wasn't the one he'd found in his room since that one actually was still in his room. He was positive it wasn't the same one when it attacked him without provocation, dashing up first to kick him in the shin and then dashing away. He cast a Fire spell at it as it moved away, lighting its rear on Fire. It ran around frantically for a moment until the fire went out and then came at him again. It dodged one Keyblade strike and zipped around behind him, jumping up to kick him in the back three times in rapid succession. He stumbled, caught himself and spun around fast, swinging out with Oblivion and batting the Onion halfway across the Maw. He would've followed up with spell... except that he couldn't seem to cast any spells. For that matter, why the hell couldn't he speak?
'Duh. Silence.' Well that was just lovely. He'd bought two remedies and he wasn't sure he really wanted to use one now. Where had that fucking Onion gone?
It was brushing itself off at the other end of the Maw and seemed thoroughly aggravated. The feeling was mutual and Roxas figured he ought to finish the damned thing off. He didn't really care at the moment to find out what it would do next. It had caught him off guard once. It wasn't getting a second chance at that.
It didn't need the second chance. It had some help arriving. Four more Mandragora type creatures arrived. Lovely. Roxas took aim at the Onion and threw Oblivion. Before it even found its mark, he threw Oathkeeper at one of the others, a tomato thing. Both Keyblades hit, fatally for the Onion, but only knocking the Tomato down. It struggled to get back up. All four remaining creatures rushed in. He recalled his Keyblades and met the charge, going for the Tomato first. It dodged the first strike and fell to the second. Meanwhile, the Pumpkin headed one attacked from the side, ramming its head into his side. He cursed the creature (or would have if he wasn't silenced), kicked it into its fellows and followed after them, striking hard. The Pumpkin fell next. The remaining ones dashed away and split up, each coming back from either side. Roxas watched the purple one, whatever the hell it was. Given their liking of headbutting attacks and the fact that that one had some sort of horn, he considered it more dangerous. He feinted left, then quickly cut back when the creature dodged right, cleanly severing its head. The last creature leapt at his back, hitting him off to the side where the Pumkin had struck him. That was going to be tender for a while. He turned to the creature, lashing out as he did and missing. He stood his ground when it came at him again, dispelling Oathkeeper and taking a baseball bat grip on Oblivion to smack the creature when it leapt at him, sending it flying. He dashed after it, throwing Oblivion at the flailing creature and then recalling the weapon so that he could strike it again. The last blow may have been overkill, though. It was definitely dead when it hit the ground.
He found some synthesis materials among the remains, but didn't bother trying to figure out right then what type they were. Not wanting to risk encountering a Flan or other magic vulnerable enemy without any defense against them, he went ahead took one of the remedies he had. He also burned the remains of the Mandragoras.
So the Chimera wasn't hanging around the Maw. Roxas took a few moments to make sure that his previous opponents had not, in fact, broken his ribs before heading over to Dark Depths. It wasn't there either... at first. As he turned to leave, he heard rush of air and a growl above him. The Chimera landed on the ledge, snarling and generally doing everything in its power to be intimidating. And it didn't look like anything Roxas had been expecting. It was a squat creature with a rounded main head and blunt snout. A yellow spined crest ran from the top of the head down the creature's back. The other heads were notably smalled, sprouted from its shoulders almost like other appendages, neatly tucked between the short thick neck of the main head and the wings, a goat like head on the left and a dragon like head on the right. It's serpent tail essentially possessed the creature's fourth head, bearing a cobra hood and preferring to make sure it was looking where the rest of the heads were... or would be but for the fact that the main head seemed to be the only one with eyes. The horns on the goat and dragon heads came from the eye sockets. For the moment, it just stood there snarling at him. Either way, this was not the Chimera that the client had seen. He had described one with a lion head, but this one had no such thing. This either meant that the man was scamming him, intending not to pay since he'd asked for a lion head and there wasn't one... or there was more than one Chimera hanging around.
"Fuck." He held the creature's gaze for a bit, letting it go about its attempts to intimidate him (which might have been successful but the fact that now that he saw it, he was also concerned with it deciding to head into town), while he felt around in his pocket. He didn't know where he'd gotten it, but he had a strange key chain that changed the Keyblade into something resembling an automobile key. It was not Fenrir. Sora had that one. This one was different. Rather than being a large, hefty blade, it looked like a katana with a slightly thicker, scalloped blade. Inexplicably, it was scalloped on the dull side. He still hadn't decided what to call it, but it did seem to be useful against creatures aligned with fire and that was the other thing Chimeras seemed to have going for them. He switched Oblivion for this one and decided against calling out the second Keyblade. Dual wielding wasn't going to help him very much with a significantly large and powerful enemy.
It waited for him to make the switch. The only reason he could think of for this was that it actually wanted a challenging fight. Roxas might be able to use that to his advantage, but he wasn't going to bank on it. He also wasn't stupid enough to make the first move. He'd learned the hard way about doing something like that. Judging by the way it watched him, so had the Chimera. He waited, watched. He was reasonably certain he could wait long enough for his foe to lose its patience and attack. It was a predator and probably hungry for something a little sweeter tasting than the other monsters in the area. Roxas had too much to lose by screwing up. The Chimera could escape easily if it was in over its head.
He was right about one thing. It was hungry. The distinctive sound of a tummy grumble, deepened by the size of the creature making it, was heard clearly over the relative silence in the area and the Chimera did not seem particularly happy with the remonder of its hunger. Roxas took a chance and allowed himself a chuckle at the embarrassing noise. That snapped what little remained of the Chimera's patience and it made a leap for him, lashing out with the right paw. Roxas jumped back, just out of the Chimera's reach, and gave it a Blizzard spell in the face. It roared and retaliated with a Thunder spell, following up quickly with another swipe of its claws and catching Roxas across the chest. It didn't manage a very solid hit and had put itself within Roxas's reach. He lashed out with the Keyblade, leaving a deep gash across the creature's face. It roared again and pawed at its face. Roxas put some distance between it and himself and offered up a Blizzaga. The Chimera snarled and belched flame like a dragon, succeeding in giving Roxas second burn for the day. Funny, it should've been a much worse burn than what it was but he really didn't have time to think on it. The Chimera charged in. Improvising, Roxas ducked under the swiping claws and thrust forward with the keyblade, going for the beast's throat. For good measure, he also cast another Blizzard. The Keyblade didn't quite make its mark, slipping into the flesh between the main head and the goat head.
The goat head bit him, sinking unexpectedly sharp teeth deep into his right arm. The creature then tossed him off the ledge. It was bad tumble to the bottom and the Chimera didn't follow him, a mistake on its part. He came to rest just under a small outcropping that block the Chimera from his view and him frok its view.
'Now you've pissed me off,' he thought, hauling himself to his feet and making sure he hadn't broken anything. He had unfortunately. The previously bruised ribs wee officially broken. The Chimera moved a bit faster than he'd been expecting it to and he admitted to himself that he had maybe over estimated what he could do with it. He pulled out an ether and took it and then stepped out to where the creature should be able to see him. It did and didn't seem particularly amused that he was still alive. With a roar, it swooped off the ledge, gliding down toward him and opening its mouth to spew more fire at him. He took aim with the Keyblade and threw it, aiming right for the Chimera's open mouth. The previously graceful glide turned into a clumsy tumble as the blade stuck in its throat. Roxas didn't recall the weapon, instead leaving it stuck while he did call up the second Keyblade as the Chimera came to a clumsy stop at the bottom of the ravine. It was too busy trying to dislodge the blade from its gullet to pay him too much mind. The dragon head turned toward him, belching flame. He dodged it, having been burned once, and lopped that head off before stabbing into the neck the main head was attached
to, as he had tried to do before.
When it stopped thrashing, he dispelled both Keyblades and looked around. It seemed there was nothing else around until he heard a rush of air above him. So there was the other Chimera. This one did have a lion's head on it... and a goat's head and a dragon's head and a hawk's head and a boar's head and even a snake's head on the end of its tail. This was probably the one the client had seen. All six of this creature's heads had eyes this time and it didn't hesitate to attack, diving out of the sky as though it had fully intended to surprise him all along. Did that mean it had watched this whole fight and had been waiting for one combatant to kill the other? Whatever. Roxas decided it was as good a time as any to try the spell he'd learned recently and met the beast's dive with Holy. Startled, it banked to the left hoping to dodge and succeeded only in putting its right wing right into the path of the spell. It landed clumsily and cast a Firaga Roxas's way to cover itself as it scrabbled to its feet. A hasty Reflect was the only thing that prevented Roxas from taking the blast full in the chest.
This was a fine mess. Still, if this one had remained hidden until the other was slain, it was probably because that one was stronger. He called up both Keyblades, throwing unnamed one at the dragon head and Oathkeeper at the goat head. The dragon head was severed but the goat head ducked, allowing the Keyblade to hit the already damaged wing. The Chimera bellowed and charged at him. He held his ground to the last second, recalling the Keyblade as the creature lunged at him and plunging it into the chest right under the hawk head's throat. The dying monster collapsed on top of him. Its death throes did more damage than it might have had a chance to do if he had chosen another tactic but he was able to extricate himself from that predicament and get away to wait until it stopped thrashing.
Battered and exhausted, Roxas took a few moments to take a potion before claiming his loot. He took pictures of both monsters and claimed the lion head from the second. Both Chimeras had a few Blaze Gems and a Blaze Crystal. The second also had a Dark Gem lodged in the gullet of the hawk head. Either way, he had accomplished his task and was feeling quite a bit worse for the wear, which reminded him of something else he'd heard about Chimeras: their bite could be poisonous.
Thoroughly disgruntled, Roxas headed back to town. No other monsters bothered him on the way back, though that might have had something to do with the fact that he'd killed two Chimeras with no opportunity to heal between battles and those Mandragoras earlier had been no picnic either.
His first stop in town was to claim his reward. The client was at Seventh Heaven, nearly fainted upon seeing him and looked about to have a heart attack when he presented the lion head from the second Chimera. He told the man about the problem of there being more than one, but didn't demand any extra reward. The client gave him an extra thousand munny and another five Mythril Shards shards anyway. He handed over the camera, having filled it mostly with pictures of the two Chimeras.
From there, he searched out Aerith. The potion could close up wounds, but it did nothing for poison and he was feeling rather sick. Going alone had been foolish, but it told him enough about what might be going on. There were stronger monsters around, which was just bad all the way around. He didn't ask himself what else could go wrong because he already knew the answer.
Anything and everything.
