Who: Roxas
What: World shift and fate's cruel decision to drop him not in Twilight Town, but in the digital copy thereof.
Where: Digital Twilight Town
When: Wee hours to late morning Thursday
Status: Complete
The quakes were disturbing enough. Suddenly finding himself on another world when he wasn't sure whether or not he could use portals anymore was not doing anything positive for Roxas's mood. Surveying where he had landed showed him... Sunset Hill.
Twilight Town.
Grumbling, he checked the community, wondering as he did how the hell his computer had followed him. Kairi, Merlin, weirdo sisters... He commented to Kairi and waited a moment before deciding that maybe the best use of his time while waiting for a rply was maybe finding somewhere indoors to sleep. At nearly one in the morning, most likely he could get a hotel room. But Sunset Hill was a residential area. That park bench he'd mentioned to Kairi was starting to look very comfortable. There was also the small problem of his state of undress when he was shifted. He wore only a T-shirt Sora had given him at one point, his jeans and socks. How his laptop and its carry bag had followed him he still didn't want to know as he stuffed the offending device into the bag and looked around. Did he remember how to get to the business district from Sunset Hill? Well, he needed to get to the train station first and hope that he had enough munny in his pockets for the fare.
It started raining as he set off, but something seemed a bit strange. He couldn't quite place it, though, and passed it off as just his current disgruntlement and the fact that he was just getting over a serious illness.
He paused in the train station lobby, noticing the looks a few nightowls waiting for late trains gave him. They'd probably noticed he didn't have shoes. He didn't really care. It was summer and the rain had actually felt refreshing, despite the strangeness he couldn't place.
'Terrific,' he thought as he noted the time for the next train and purchased a ticket, 'Next train's at three in the morning.' Grumbling more, he took a seat on a bench and opened his laptop to check his messages. Odd. Kairi usually responded fairly quick when he tagged her entries. It could be that she was busy tagging other entries and he really didn't feel like checking at the moment. If something was wrong, she would ask for help.
He was halfway dozing again when his train arrived. The Conductor gave him an odd look as he took the ticket, but said nothing. For his part, Roxas supposed he ought to just be greatful some concerned citizen hadn't tried to take him home with them... or worse, some creep pretending to be a concerned citizen. He grumbled again and tried to get comfortable.
The ride was uneventful, as was locating a hotel with a vacancy. His sleep, however, was quite eventful....
--------------------------
It was a dream he'd had before. He was strolling around Twilight Town with people he knew, sometimes Hayner and the gang, sometimes Sora and Kairi or Namine. Occasionally, he was alone, just enjoying a quiet day of nice weather or maybe butting heads with Seifer. On extremely rare occasions, he was with Axel and/or Xion.
This time, he was alone and expecting to meet up with Hayner for some reason. Hayner was already waiting for him, leaning a wall near the Sandlot.
"You're early," Roxas remarked as he approached. Hayner didn't respond, didn't even seem to realize anyone was there.
Perturbed, Roxas waved a hand in front of Hayner's face. Nothing. It was when Hayner stepped away from the wall and passed right through his outstretched hand that Roxas realized nothing was right. Many memories surged back at once: waking in Twilight Town, meeting the Organization, his time with them and leaving, his battles with and eventual capture by Riku... and his confinement in the fake town with the fake friends.
With that realization, everyone disappeared, leaving the town utterly deserted and everything in view pixellated like a poor quality 3D animation. His cries for someone, anyone, to answer him were met with silence at first. Then, as his cries became more insistent and he more panicked, a voice replied, "How can they speak with one who does not exist?"
Evertything faded to dark around him and he found himself falling into deeper darkness...
----------------------------
Roxas came awake with a start, panic rising in his gut as he looked around, expecting to see the same pixallation his nigtmare had ended with. There was only the hotel room and the unending sunset streaming through the window. Trembling, he sat up in the bed and drew his knees up to his chest. He wasn't crying, per se, but there were tears in his eyes.
Were he able, he would've gone back to sleep for a short while, but he'd never been able to get back to sleep right away after that nightmare. Instead, his slipped out of bed and went to the window. He supposed his best bet, and probably what he should've done in the first place, was to go and see Yen Sid. But possibly, the first order of business was to get a pair of shoes... if he had the munny.
Unfortunately, after the hotel room, Roxas was flat broke. He didn't even have anything on him to sell. Well, he didn't know the real Hayner, Pence and Olette... not really since he doubted meeting them once while he was still with the Organization counted as knowing them... but they knew Sora and he was pretty sure they'd be willing to help a friend of Sora's. He just had to find them. Hopefully the fakes had been accurate regarding their summer routines.
At least, thankfully, the fake was accurate to the layout of the town and finding the usual spot wasn't difficult. The hard part was getting up the courage to enter it and see if anyone was there...
Olette was there, and she responded as though seeing the ghost of one who had been dead for a while.
"Roxas? Where have you been?"
"I... what? Y-you know me?" That was not in the least bit comforting.
"Um... yeah? Are you feeling okay? What happened to you?"
He felt the same panic rising and he almost bolted right then and there. They shouldn't know him. How could they?
Hadn't someone said the fake town was still there?
"No... I'm not okay." He stepped back outside without another word and stood for a moment, trying to calm himself and failing. This couldn't possibly be happening.
"Roxas?"
Startled, he spun around and stared. Olette was giving him that look and it only made things worse. She wasn't real but she was giving him a very real 'you-really-ought-to-tell-me-what's-going-on-mister look and he just. couldn't. take it.
"If I tell you what's bothering me right now, you'll think I'm crazy." His voice shook as he spoke and really, it would sound crazy. How could he tell her or any of the others that they are copies of people and were part of an intricate computer program that was essentially a disguised prison? The short answer was that he couldn't.
"You disappeared for a year and now you show up looking like you've had it rough," she replied, "Are you sure you don't want to talk about it? A friend of yours was here not to long ago. She said you were fine, but..."
"A friend... of mine?" Hadn't Ray been the one to visit and find that this fake was still here?
"Yes."
'Acquiantance' was probably a better term, but he kept his mouth shut. If there was a way into this fake town, there was a way out.
"I'm... doing better than it looks like right now, although 'fine' isn't the word I would use. I think I know where I can get some answers on this though." He turned to leave, but stop when she grabbed his arm.
"Please don't say the mansion," she said, suddenly sounding distressed, "You disappeared after deciding to look into something there."
That did make him pause, but only for a moment.
"I know that. I did get my answers there, though." With that, he gently pried her hand off of his arm and started off. He could probably be dealing with this better if he hadn't been yanked half asleep off of another world and dropped here and if he wasn't just getting over a severe illness. But he wasn't so lucky and he needed to get out of here before he freaked out. He didn't know if Olette would follow him or not and he had a hard time figuring out whether or not it should matter, but he couldn't stay where he was. Especially not when he knew what it was and what it was meant for.
He found Seifer in the woods near the mansion. He really didn't want to deal with the cocky bastard at the moment, but he was noticed before he could slip by.
"Well, look who's here," Seifer crowed, "What did rock were you hiding under all this time?"
"That's none of your business Seifer," Roxas replied tersely, "Leave me alone." He moved to step past and wasn't really surprised when the macho bastard got in his way.
"Really now? I think it is my business."
Roxas didn't even bother with trying to talk it out. He knew he probably shouldn't use any magic yet, but a quick Aero spell left Seifer lying flat a few feet away and wondering how he'd gotten there. Roxas stepped past unhindered this time.
The gate was open, though whether it was still open from when he had opened or it had been closed and someone else had opened it, he didn't really care to know. He entered without much hesitation and looked around. The only reason he'd thought of the mansion was because that was where he'd been taken to be put into the program the first time and that prophecy had shown Sora being able to leave and enter the program freely from there, though for gameplay purposes it had never let him leave the copy's computer room by via the stairs.
The computer was semi functional when Roxas found it, still smashed from his tantrum when he'd read certain documents on it. He pushed that thought aside for the moment and tried to figure out how to get it to let him out.
He was getting close to smashing it again when he noticed something that might help.
"Transporter?" He clicked on that and followed the guide that popped up with it, suddenly feeling a bit stupid. If he'd looked over the damned thing a little better, he might have gotten out and been able to find his answers on his own terms... maybe. Still, that was the past and he really didn't want to get hung up on it. He did have his own life now and while he was having some issues, he wouldn't trade it for anything. At the moment all he wanted was to get the hell out of this computer world.
Thankfully, the transporter was working and kicked on when the right commands were entered. He couldn't get to the portal it opened fast enough and wound up tripping and falling flat on his face on the other side. For one confused and rather scary moment, he thought he hadn't made it through the portal. He calmed down though, when he saw the computer. It was intact.
It took him another agonizing moment to stay his hand from deleting the fake town. He did shut down the transporter, though, as he doubted that having anyone from the fake town wondering into the real could be a good thing.
Roxas was reminded of the fact that he needed shoes as he made his way out of the mansion and found some broken glass the hard way. Grumbling some more, but otherwise immensely relieved, he decided to go with his original plan of asking the real Hayner, Pence and Olette for help.
