Who: Amy & Jalen
What: Squealing over the impending arrival of Mabry & Brendan's kid
Where: Rainbow's End
When: April 30th

"EEEE, baby!"

Jalen lay stretched out on the bed, reading. At the sound of his wife's happy cry, he glanced up, eyebrows raised.

"Something I should know?"

Amy was perched on the edge of the bed, laptop on her knees. She grinned as she closed the lid then stood, crossing over to the dresser.

"Baby! Mabry's water broke." Setting the computer down carefully, she turned to face him, still beaming. Jalen laid his book aside, smiling faintly.

"I hope you'll be this excited when it's ours."

"Oh, more. Way more." Sighing happily, Amy walked back to the bed and flopped onto her stomach. "I can't wait to babysit."

"Have you done that before? With-" He raised a finger to forestall her protests. "Actual babies, not toddlers."

She stuck her tongue out at him. "Yep! Looked after my friend's niece when she was a tiny little thing, maybe a week old."

"For how long?"

Frowning, Amy twisted herself onto her back so she could look up at him without putting a permanent crick in her neck.

"...Why?"

"I want to know. How long did you take care of her?"

"Um..." Amy lifted her right hand, studying the knuckles. If she stared hard enough, she could just make out the scars she'd gotten as a child when she'd flipped her scooter...

"It wasn't that long, was it?"

She frowned at the skin. She'd been a dumb kid.

"Shush, you."

Jalen was suddenly in her field of vision, leaning over her. "I will not. Tell me or..." He was quiet for a moment, obviously trying to think of a suitable threat. "No babies for you."

Her eyes almost rolled right out of her head as she answered, letting her hand drop. "Oh right. Fine, three hours, okay? The kid's parents went to the store and left me and Sally to watch her. They were gone a lot longer than they said they'd be, but we did okay. 'Licia mostly slept anyway."

Her husband smirked as he straightened. "I knew it."

Amy reached over, giving his arm a slap. "That doesn't mean I can't learn!" Rolling over again, she attempted to bury her face in her arms, but was foiled by her glasses. "I'm gonna be a good mom. I promised myself."

"I don't doubt that." Jalen reached over, rubbing her back soothingly. After a few moments, she pushed herself up onto her elbows, studying the covers.

"That thing with Lilith...The day she comes over, I want you somewhere else."

"I can take care of myself." He sounded mildly offended. She sighed, rubbing her forehead. She didn't want to argue with him.

"I know that, but it'd make me feel better. Okay? Please?" She bit her lip. It was stupid, what was she worried about? She felt Jalen kiss the top of her head a few seconds later.

"...All right, but I won't go far."

Giggling, she pushed herself up fully. "Damn straight. I'll lock you in the library."

Jalen pulled her into his arms, hugging her tight. "No matter where I am, my heart is always with you."

Closing her eyes, Amy smiled. "I married a closet sap."

And she was loving every second.
