between the real world and a fantasy

Who: Ray
What: Someone decides to poke around the town for a bit.
Where: The Haunted Mansion
When: Tuesday, March 10th
Status: Complete

Ray stopped when she walked in the door, looking at the stairs in dismay. Ryune hadn't been lying when she'd said they had broken. With a shake of her head, she walked over and inspected the area, looking for a place where she could hoist herself up without too much trouble. When she found a safe enough spot, she jumped and grabbed the lower ledge, using the balustrades to pull her up further before finally climbing over it and onto the second floor.

"Well, we're off to a good start," she said to herself with a small smile.

She poked her head into Namine's old room. All those drawings were still there. She smiled to herself and moved on, heading toward the library. She scanned the books briefly before continuing down the stairs and into the next room. She looked in one of the doors here – an empty closet, nothing special – and moved on to the next room, where she finally stopped and grinned.

"The old computer room... Let's see if this still works." Ray hit the power switch, waiting for the password screen to come up. When it did, she entered the password from the game, chuckling when it let her through. "Would have thought he might have changed it or something," she muttered. It finished loading everything quickly, screen lighting up with a bunch of different windows. She clicked through them, mildly surprised at how complicated the set-up really was. Leave it to Ansem, she thought absently.

One window caught her eye, however – it showed a 3-dimensional picture of Twilight Town, looking almost exactly like it had in the game. A sidebar held a lot of information, some of which was constantly changing, others staying the same.

"This must be..." She stood and approached the device that had, at one point, transferred Roxas into the digital version of Twilight Town. "I wonder if this thing still works..." she thought aloud, reaching out to touch it. A flash of light surrounded her and faded just as quickly, and when she turned around she was looking at the very same computer room – only with a decimated computer.

"Whoa," she whispered. "It's still here..."

Ray trotted out into the mansion’s main room, carefully lowering herself down to the first floor after noting that the staircase was still a pile of rubble. That meant she'd have to be careful; there might be digital versions of Ryune, Cheryle, and herself running around here. But even so, she was curious. Besides, Roxas might like to here from his friends, digital or not.

She walked out of the mansion, making sure to hide the nunchaku she'd brought with her in the bushes – she doubted she'd need them. With no one to manage the program, it wasn't likely to have the monsters the real world was currently hosting. She made her way through the woods and out into the town, smiling to herself in amazement. It was practically a perfect simulation.

As she passed the bakery she'd used to work at, she glanced in the window – yep, her old coworkers were still there. Ray continued on into the Sandlot, pausing when she heard her name called. Hayner had been practicing for the Struggle tournament later this year, Pence and Olette watching. She grinned at them and walked over to greet them.

"I thought you were at college," Olette commented by way of greeting. Pence nodded.

"Um... Yeah, I am! I just... I felt like visiting everyone," she lied. Time for a subject change, she decided. "So, you getting any better, Hayner? Or are you still losing to Roxas?" she asked teasingly, trying to act like her digital self would. The boy slumped visibly at his friend's name.

"You haven't heard?" Pence asked with a frown. "Roxas is missing."

"...Missing, huh? You sure he just didn't get lost looking around the old mansion?" Hayner shook his head in frustration.

"We checked there! We didn't find him. He's not anywhere!"

"Hey, he's got to be somewhere," Ray insisted. "Maybe he moved?"

"He would have told us," Hayner grumbled.

"...Maybe it was too quick and unexpected that he didn't have time?"

"He would have made time," Pence replied.

"Okay, okay, Roxas is missing!" she said finally, throwing her hands up in defeat. "Hey, don't look so down about it. I'm sure he'll come back. I'll bet he misses you guys." She grinned at them. "And I'll tell him that if I see him when I leave again. Okay?"

Olette smiled. "Great! If you do see him, tell him to come visit us!"

"Yeah, we want to see him beat Seifer at Struggle again!" Pence declared, eliciting a laugh from everyone.

"And I need a rematch!" Hayner said fiercely, grinning.

"I'll do that! But right now, I've got to get going. I only had time to drop by and say hi, so I'll see you guys some other time, yeah?" With a wave, Ray turned back into the city proper, wandering around for a bit. She froze when she saw a familiar blonde up ahead, tempted to say hello to her as well, but finally decided it'd be better if she didn't. She turned and started in the direction of the old mansion.

It's probably for the better if I don't screw around too much, she thought as she ran through the woods.
