Who: Jalen and Amy (And Awiergan and Eli)
What: Jalen's nightmare (Worst of the ones he's had so far)
Where: Rainbow's End
When: December 19th, 2011
Status: Complete

The hot sunshine and blue sky with it's drifting clouds was at odds with the heartrending scene before him. A large hole dug in the dirt, a shroud-wrapped body lying within, a few possessions placed alongside. A sewing needle, a few beads, a necklace that he'd given her.
One by one their sons stepped forward to the edge of the grave, bowing their heads before moving slowly away. Lucan, Rinan, Wacian...

His head jerked to the side and he blinked, staring hard at the spot where his youngest son had stood. Where he'd thought he'd stood. Wacian had been gone two long years, it was only his eyes playing tricks...though it was the child's mother in that grave.

Now alone, Jalen stepped to the graveside and paused, looking upwards, trying to mask his grief. She'd been so sick...but still, he'd hoped that maybe-

Taking a deep breath, he lowered his head to say his goodbyes, and froze. The hole was filled in, covered over with green grass and there was a stone marker at the head of it. It read, 'Here lies Amy Nicole Daegal, our Beloved Light'. Jalen shook his head repeatedly, staggering back. How could this be here? He was burying Elswyth, he was home- Amy wasn't dead, this was wrong. He turned away from the distressing headstone, only to find himself in a house. Not Rainbow's End, this one was smaller and considerably less grand. He began to cross the living room when Eli entered from a hallway off to the side. He was nearly his father's height, though he couldn't have been more than fifteen or sixteen. He grinned when he saw his father.

"Dad! I was wondering where you were, Mom taught me this great spell. I wanted to show you-"

Jalen waved a hand and cut him off. "Your mom? She's all right?"

Eli gave him a 'Duh, idiot' look. "Yeeeaah, she's fine. Hasn't had any problems since she finally got rid of that nasty Light issue she was having. Remember, years ago? She buried it and you went all sentimental and insisted on putting up a headstone? Geeze."

Jalen simply stared in disbelief at this boy who was supposed to be his son. This was wrong, it was horrific, there was something he was supposed to know-

But before he could puzzle it out, Awiergan appeared from the same hallway that Eli had.

"Oh good, the Warrior Tuna's back." She said this with sarcasm dripping before giving Jalen an angelic smile. "Out reminiscing, were you? We've told you there's no point to that. What's done is done."

"This isn't right. Song-"

"Song, Song, Song. Sorry, no dice. She's been gone even longer than your beloved Saelig, don't you remember? Now, if you're hoping that bitch Tinuviel will have pity on you..." Awiergan shrugged. "She doesn't even have pity for her own little spawn. Poor, poor Larkin~"

"It's a dream," Jalen finally managed. "Get out of my head."

Awiergan made a clucking noise. "Am I really in your head, or are you poking around in mine? Peter Rabbit would be wise to stay out of Mr. McGregor's garden."

She walked up to him and reached out, cupping his chin. "Dear Jalen, this isn't a dream, it's the future."

Amy had actually been having a somewhat decent dream for once. It was filled with dancing bunnies in sparkly tutus that were asking giant talking trees if they'd take them to the Royal Ball, but it wasn't an outright nightmare. The trees were just offering to chop themselves up to make a carriage for the bunnies when the bed shook, followed by a crash. She jerked awake and stumbled out of bed, intent on getting Eli out of his crib and into a doorway. She paused when she heard Jalen swear and realized nothing was moving.

"Jale?"

A long sigh was the only response. She frowned in the dimness. Not a lot of moonlight was making it's way in at the moment, but she could see him sitting on the floor, something else behind him.

"Are you hurt?" She moved to flip the light switch and when nothing happened, realized the crash must've been the lamp hitting the floor.

"No."

That was it, no explanations, no apologies. The frown getting deeper, Amy went back to her side of the bed and switched on the lamp. Jalen blinked a few times at the brightness, then pulled himself back onto the bed, leaving the broken lamp where it fell.

"Bad dream again?" Stupid question, she knew, but if he fell off the bed this time he needed to talk about it. Jalen, however, didn't share her view.

"Obviously. Go back to sleep, Saelig."

"Yeah, right." She crawled onto the bed with him and draped herself over his back, leaning her chin on his shoulder. "Please tell me."

Jalen said nothing for some moments, then: "I dreamed about Elswyth's burial."

Amy's nose wrinkled, and she hugged him tight. "I'm sorry...Did you try to change it like I showed you?"

"I didn't know I was dreaming. Not at first. Not until-" He stopped abruptly. "Things are fine, go back to sleep."

"'Until' what?"

"Nothing, just go back to sleep!" He pulled away from her and stood, gesturing to the bed. Amy just sat there and stared at him, obviously hurt.

"Saelig..."

"No, it's fine. I shouldn't be digging. When you want to talk you will." With that, she burrowed back under the covers.

Jalen sighed. He checked on Eli to satisfy himself that their son was well, then climbed back into bed. A small sniffle came from Amy, and he scooted closer, wrapping an arm around her.

"I'm sorry," He murmured into her hair. "I'll tell you the rest in the morning, all right? Promise."

"Uh huh." Amy squirmed around so she was facing him, gave him a quick kiss, then tucked herself against him. "You'll have sweet dreams this time if I have to beat everything in your head with a spiked bat."

Jalen laughed and closed his eyes.
