In response to Song's attempt, the road did seem to widen, but it was quite wide before the branches of the vast trees ceased to touch over it, and even when they did, no light descended from above to light the path. Instead, the mist seemed darker, as if the opposite of a sun shone overhead, and darkness seemed to spread along the path, even darker than the forest itself.
