Mabry hesitantly landed the borrowed gummi-ship at the agreed upon coordinates. She was still only an indifferent pilot, but necessity had forced her to it. She felt lonely. She had left Ashlyn at home, and while it wasn't the first time, it wasn't yet something that seemed routine. Just last week, they had celebrated Ashlyn's second birthday with cake, ice cream, presents, and her first pair of "big girl panties." Leaving her just now was especially difficult. And then there was Songbird. Mabry had just as strong an inclination to go to Twilight Town to be there for her younger sister.

But this had to come first. There was no avoiding it. So she flashed the gummi-ship's lights and settled herself to wait for Medrau.

"Love . . . you," was the quiet reply. "Did . . . you . . . see . . . the . . . doctor?"

She ignored that question. It wasn't the time to discuss that sensitive topic. And where the hell was help? She needed someone to get here so she could run away.

"Song?" Mabry asked again.

"Stop talking. You're hurt." It might have been good advice, but her tone was a familiar one, and not meant to show concern. It was low and nearly a growl, listed in her head as the 'don't talk to me I'm brooding' voice.

"Need . . . a . . . distraction," Mabry replied. "And . . . you've . . . been . . . shutting . . . me . . . out." The cough that punctuated this sentence was weak, but dry. "That . . . hurts . . . too."

A distraction. Fine. She could manage that. Maybe if she found something to ramble about, it would keep Mab quiet and avoid the touchy topics at the same time.

She tapped her fingernails on the stone floor, racking her brain for randomness.

"... When I get home, I'm building a pillow fort. Me an' Amy. Biggest one you've ever seen. I'm warning you now, I could take over a whole floor of Rainbow's End. Well, maybe half a floor. Plenty of beds with mattresses and pillows. And blankets. Maybe Josi will come back then. Lured by the pillow fort. Have you ever had sex in a pillow fort? Sounds childish. I bet it would be fun. Could make Amy blush. 'Course we'll have to tear down the fort eventually. Pillow fight, then. Jalen will win, you know. But Josi's good with short-range weapons and duel-wielding, so maybe not. Me, I've got good aim. I'll distract him with a pillow to the head, Amy and Josi will pounce. Oh, and Chase. She's quick and clever. Wherever she is...." She cleared her throat. "I could really use a cup of tea."

"So . . . you . . . are . . . coming . . . home . . . with . . . me?" Mabry's small voice was hopeful. "Missed . . . you."

"'Course I am. Sure. Maybe..." She glanced at the exit longingly, recalling the desire to run and hide where she wouldn't be able to hurt anyone... oh damn, was that how Josiah felt when he left? This possession thing was really getting old.

"Promise."

She glared at Mabry, rather aghast.
"... No."

Mabry looked at her sadly. "Why . . . not?"

"Stupid... possession.... precautions." Her search for words inadvertently echoed Mabry's staggered speech. "If I can hurt you, I could do it to someone else."

"Better . . . for . . . you . . . to be . . .where we . . . can keep . . .an eye . . on you," Mabry pointed out. "If . . . if you . . . go . . . there's . . . nothing . . . any of . . .us . . .can do . . . to help."

Right, there was her own argument thrown back at her. Didn't it figure? She'd been the one to scold and fuss each time someone else ran off for that reason. Despite her own history, she'd never experienced the emotional basis for that kind of decision. It was a real effort to let Mabry's logic - her own logic - convince her, and that pissed her off further. She should be the one to know better, after all.

"Fine. Whatever."

"And . . . you can . . . fight this," Mabry went on weakly. "You've . . . done it . . . before. . . . I've . . . always . . . had . . . faith . . . in you."

"I told you to stop talking," she muttered in response, but with less of her wolfish growl.
"It's different, anyway."

The sound of a gummi ship landing was the first warning that someone was coming.

The sound of Aria's random swearing came a few minutes later but, it will be a minute or two before she comes within sight.

Mabry coughed again. "You have . . . the worst . . . bedside . . . manner . . . . and I . . . think out . . . ride is . . .here."

Privately, she made up her mind not to drop the subject.

She also thought about how much being moved was going to suck.

But that was alright, help had arrived and she was going to a hospital. Good.

Song surged to her feet and nearly crashed into the wall on her way out. She didn't remember coming through the tunnel or the outer temple, and she didn't get very far before her body remembered that she'd spent most of her energy keeping Mabry alive, but it didn't really matter as long as they were found.

"Aria! We're here!"

Aria quickly headed to the call. When she got within sight she noted that Song looked like shit.

She'd spent the trip detaching one of the bunks from her ship and was bringing it since she didn't have a proper stretcher.

"Lets go. I sent for Seph," she said quickly without stopping her trek to the cave. "He'll either open a corridor to a hospital or just make carrying her a lot easier so, he'll be a help."

"That won't fit through the tunnel," she gestured at the cot. "If Seph can portal her out, that'd be best. She glanced back into the cavern, then in the direction of the ships, still a bit frantic. "Look, I'll wait here for Seph. You go tell her he's coming."
She wouldn't run, but it was very hard to be around her injured sister just now. She'd take what small escape she could get.

"He might be reluctant to do that. He's been really careful about exposing people to the corridors lately." Still, she dropped the thing and hurried into the cave. "Though, if it's that narrow it might be impossible to carry her out otherwise," she said before she got out of earshot.

Which looked like would be the case. She'd suggest Seph take her right to a hospital once he got inside but, he'd never been to one. It might actually be faster to find one by gummi ship.

Well, at least she was pretty sure she could heal well enough to keep her from dying before then. Hell, Pancake could probably do that.

Mabry could hear the conversation pretty clearly from where she lay in the tunnel. Something in the echoes brought their voices back to her as if they were only a few feet away. She tried to straighten herself to look less bad than she was, but her limbs were not feeling particularly responsive, so she merely forced a smile and gathered her strength to reassure Aria that she really wasn't dying just now.

Alone for the moment, Song leaned against the outer wall of the cave temple and let herself sink to the ground. She needed to collect herself and figure out exactly what was going on here. Getting all the answers would probably require a dream dive and an interrogation with a few villains, and the fact that Song couldn't do all of that right now was very frustrating. For all she knew, Medrau would come back and change her mind, assuming it even was Medrau. Mabry'd seen her, but glamours and illusions were certainly not unheard of. She still couldn't believe that the new Refugee was somehow herself.

A minute or two later Seph stepped out of a Corridor about halfway between the ships and the cave. It only took him a few seconds to spot Song sitting against the wall.

"They're inside," he muttered when he got close. It wasn't a question. It was fairly obvious that they were. Song looked like she needed to talk but, taking care of Mabry couldn't wait that long.

"Will you be alright here by yourself?" Of course he was going in without her no matter what the answer but, he felt the need to ask.
